Submited By: Christopher on 07/17/2008 Small in size but big in power! I love this heli. Designed around a 6s power system, it's capable of hard 3D flight at low headspeeds in the 2400 to 2700 range. The secret sauce is the high voltage 6s setup used to spin beefy 350mm main blades. High voltage means low current. Low current means smaller packs are needed, thus allowing 6s to work in a heli this small. The Outrage XP 6s 1300 was designed with this heli in mind and it works great. Feed that power into a low kv motor (around 1600 to 1700kv) and you have a 3D beast with big teeth ready to play for 6 minutes or more. I chose the 1600kv Outrage motor and it really works well. Outrage also has a 1700kv version out now that packs a bit more punch at the expense of a little flight time.
This heli is easy to build with detailed instructions and is a dream to fly. Compared to my T-Rex 450 and T-Rex 600 Nitro, this flys more like the 600. The CG is much better than the 450 and that helps the G5 fly like it's on rails. Take that and put the grunt of 6s power behind those 350mm blades and this thing will eat 450s for lunch and do it for over 6 minutes! Overall, it felt more locked in and less twitchy than my 450. Right now I've got mine setup to run a 2700 headspeed and I get about 7 minutes on average with mild 3D.
If you're thinking about something in the 450 size class, take a good look at this one. Parts cost is low but the quality is high. I've had the pleasure of meeting Charley Stephens (designer) and the whole Outrage team. They have abused and tortured these helis and they wouldn't put something out they didn't fully believe in.
A simple concept put to good use, the G5 adds a new spark to the 450-size heli market.
