Kontronik Kosmik ESC for scale heli use.

Almost 10 years ago I was introduced to this brand of ESC’s by my local hobby shop owner who swore that these were great ESC’s and I should use them. I balked at the price and he failed to provide me any credible and logical data to support his claim. 7 years later I tried using a 160 amp Kosmik in my Roban AS350 and have been hooked ever since and here is why….

Until this time I’d been using Castle Creation ESC’s and Scorpion motors in my Roban scale helis which worked great and I was flying using pitch curve/throttle curve to control my rotor rpm. Again, not a bad technique and a great tool to know, but I realized that there was a lot of heat dissipation in either the ESC or the motor and I was having to let the heli cool down after each flight. I was open to trying the governor mode in the Kontronik and still using Scorpion motors, I am very pleased with my purchases.

I don’t care for the steep price of each unit, but the peace of mind that you are getting quality engineering has been my stance. The freewheeling unit in the Kosmik is unbeatable and with properly paired gearing and motor, my aircraft fly for 7-13 minutes. There is no more heat issues with my motors and the governor holds rotor RPM to within 30-50 rpm’s of desired speed. The setup of the ESC is simple through transmitter stick function - although if you aren’t German I recommend YouTube for setup vs trying to read the instruction manual. I have the prog disc and set it up via a Windows based laptop. I prefer this method because I can save the settings file. Drawbacks are that you can’t share files between products ie 200/170/160 Kosmiks.

I’d recommend Kontronik ESC’s to anyone that wanted reliable efficiency of German engineering and a historically full tech support of their product. HobbyWing ESC’s offer the same tech at a more reasonable price, but I don’t feel their governor control is as good and for me in my scale ships that is key. My good friends fly HW 130/200’s in their Roban 700/800 scale ships and we have similar setups and flying styles but you can see that my helis hold at more consistent Headspeed throughout the full flight envelop.

I wish I could get Kontronik controllers for the HobbyWing or Castle prices, but I just wait for HeliDirect to give the 12% discounts and the rest is history.

Iwas warned

I was told if I try one of these It would be tough to use anything else. I know they are costly but trust me, they are worth it. The slow start alone is incredible. Try on, you'll be hooked.
