VMAR L-19 Bird Dog - Military Scale Nostalgia.

Dressed in scale military livery, VMAR introduces the nostalgic Cessna L-19 Bird Dog in two different military trims for exceptional scale definition that looks great on the ground and in the skies above. Constructed of a solid balsa and ply layup, the VMAR L-19 Bird Dog is an exact scale representation of the 19050's era L-19 Bird Dog, which provided the perfect observation / communication platform for the United States army.

Spanning 49" from tip to tip, the VMAR L-19 offers exceptional scale flight characteristics, with excellent low speed maneuverability & predictable stall performance. Amiable in character, the L-19 is rugged and tough, with its smaller size making it the perfect plane for limited area locales, such as fields, parks and smaller landing strips.

Incredibly easy to build with a bolt together, no glue assembly process, the L-19 Bird Dog requires minimal work, with a (3) to (5) hour assembly process. Fully covered in a Polycote ECS covering, the VMAR L-19 Bird Dog makes the entire build process a simplified affair, allowing you to spend less time assembling the aircraft and more time at the field and in the air.

Utilizing one servo per aileron for maximum precision and control, the L-19 Bird Dog was designed for electric power, making this plane incredibly easy to setup and maintain. Offering excellent bang for your buck value, the L-19 Bird Dog is ultra low in cost, and requiring minimal equipment to get in the air, equating to a full up build far less than comparable aircraft. Further this with a 2 piece wing that allows easy transport and storage, the L-19 provides is easier than ever to manage in the hangar or at the field.

Easy to fly with excellent levels of scale detail and quality, the VMAR L-19 Bird Dog is the perfect choice for beginner to advanced pilots, offering gentle flying qualities with scale realism that will be appreciated by all.

Construction materials

Very poor elevator design and materials. Wood very thin and frail. Not sure will control flight.

This was my first ARF. It went together pretty quickly. I had some foamie crashes so I already had the parts. Well worth $100 to have another plane. I put a piece of wire between the two main wheels to stiffen them up on landing. Two broken propellers later I realized this was a quick easy fix for soft landing gear. Also had a missing part that was replaced immediately by helidirect. All in all glad I bought it. Large top hatch gives access two cockpit where I put a camera. Large bottom hatch gives access to work a battery will go. I used 2200 4s But a 3S power system is all that is needed. It’s a lightweight plane.

cheap arf

Cheap construction, not impressed.
Lots of detail with printed stick on covering.
Thin alum wing tube, will replace with a stronger carbon fiber tube.
Cheap thin engine cowl, will line with fiber cloth and epoxy.
Just not a quality rc model, bought because I like L-9 but this one doesn't meet my expectations.

Bird Dog collection

I am a big fan of the Vmar L 19. I have 3 of the Army design. During the past couple of years, I couldn't find anyone who had the L 19 in Air Force gray. I am very happy to finally get one. I have not put it together as yet but it looks like the previous ones I have bought. There is always a few things in the Vmar models that either have to be corrected or modified in the the assembly process. As a whole, the Bird Dogs perform very well in the air and they look great. The biggest problem is trying to find the right motor and battery combination that will fit and still retain flyability.

Didn’t get to even open the box yet!

Received within a few days. Haven’t had a chance to open the box yet and see what’s inside.
Will update when I get to that stage of this project!
Asked for info on what are the best servo’s for this plane from helidir. Response was nothing more than a sales pitch with links to all the servos available from helidirect. No real advise on which servo unit was best for this model.
Photo shows box with four other model planes that I have yet to open and build. Doing some remodeling in my house now and that’s taking up a lot of my time,
Thanks and good day

Great kit but........

Forgot to mention in the original review that the included instructions are worthless. If you are not an experienced builder, you will need help finishing this kit. All the parts are there but it takes some study to get it right. Also the pilot that is included is huge- not even close to scale!
