The Speck B is a great entry into the Micro Buggy platform and has a great drive out of the box.
I moved the electronics around and am using a spektrum battery which is a bit flatter distributing that weight better.
This was my first Direct RC order and I did have some complications, ordered the Yellow and it said shipped as yellow, it took two weeks and the day before arrival it changed to Razor Orange everywhere. This is pretty frustrating that the information just changes and makes it look like my original order is a fake, and really made me question the overall service.
Even now. My review is set for Razor Orange according to judge.me.
I've had the Speck-B for a couple of weeks now and have really enjoyed it. The weight and quality while in your hand feels really good. The shocks are very smooth and soak up jumps well. The body is easy to take off and put on. The patch of hook and loop fastener on the body did come loose, but a little super glue makes it secure.
The remote has a great amount of settings, allowing you to dial in the steering and throttle. I was able to turn down the throttle to allow my kids to ease into driving it. The dip switches on the remote are handy too, I set my brake to immediately go into reverse. Out of the box it is brake, and then reverse. So you can customize it to your liking.
The motor is peppy and turning is solid. I somehow managed to get a tiny rock past the motor guard and stuck in the spur gear. Although the screws are very small, it was pretty easy for a novice like me to get in there and get it out, problem fixed in no time.
I do wish they would come out with a few more stock body options. This would allow a family or a group of friends to all have different bodies. It is cool that they have a clear body option and a couple options from Radianz though. The Radianz bodies are really pricey, I scored a couple during the past sale, but maybe in the future if they make more the price could hopefully come down.
I agree with another reviewer about being careful not to tighten the wheels too much. If you tighten until the wheel nut is tight then it will bind, so back it off a little bit. I think this buggy is a great value, and I have ordered a second one so that my kids and I can drive at the same time.
Full disclosure I did receive this Speck-B through the DirectRC Facebook giveaway. This review was written under my own free will and neither Hobby Plus nor DirectRC asked for a review. I am fairly new to RC and have a 1/10 and 1/16 scale RC and was in the market for a 1/24 scale. I was looking at the Losi Micro B and this one came out and on paper looked to be better in many ways. And based on my experience with the buggy I have purchased a second with my own money.
Love the control, speed, design and i like it because it durable.
Comparing this to the losi micro b. This car does seem better. The tolerance in the suspension parts is better therefore you get more precise steering control. You also have the ability to use 050 size motor which the micro b failed at. There is alsomore room on the chassis in general which makes it easy for swapping out electronics and using a brushless system. If I was "new" to the micro scale size RC environment and I had to choose. I would recommend this buggy over the other options out there. You simply have more options with this buggy for future upgrades. If you have the micro b or micro t. You have to buy additional aftermarket parts just to try and "fix" the steering issues, and to fit an aftermarket brushless system is another issue on its own. The speck B is simply all of the improvements that losi should have accomplished.
This is a very well made 1/24 scale buggy. The speed is ok out the box but I highly recommend getting a bigger 050 motor or even better yet, go brushless. I found that the Furitek Grasshopper is a perfect upgrade for this. I was the first to install one in this buggy. It mounts right up with no mods necessary. The only possible issue is rear wheel binding if you tighten the wheel nuts too tightly.
