I wanted to try an open source radio for some time. I like a compact radio which is easy to hold ( I don't use neck straps), and has capabilities for multi aircraft.
With helicopters, and EDF Jets, location of various switches is an important issue. Ease of feeling the switch can make the difference between a successful flight or crash.
The Zorro met my criteria and then some. It feels good in the hands and I have medium size hands. When holding, all of the switches are easily at my fingertips, and separated enough that I don't select the wrong one.
There are 2 Three way switches, 2 Two way switches, 2 pushbutton switches, and two thumb wheel trims on top . All are easily accessible. There are two more pushbutton switches on the back which are in easy access to your fingers.
With the Edgetx already installed in my 4 in one, programming is very diverse, as you can program almost any configuration thought of. This can control 16 channels of receiver. There are a lot of Youtube videos on programming which are very helpful. If you don't like programming, this may not be the right fit for you. If you like to (Have it your way), you will love this radio.
Pro's
Large display. Up to 8 units of telemetry can be displayed.
Easily seen in bright sun
A lot of variables for voice (Alarms voltage , temp etc.)
Switches are easy to work with.
Has a great feel for thumbing the joysticks.
Range very good. Has Rssi and quality display and alarms.
Vario fo gliders ( One reason I bought the transmitter )
Battery life over 4 hrs per charge on internal 18350 batteries 4-in-One.
Made to use an external battery if needed.
Con's
Programming thumb wheel very sensitive, during programming when pressed will advance to the next setting. Have to watch closely during programming.
Gimbals are smaller, thus more sensitive. Use some expo to smooth them out.
Should have included batteries for the unit.
Overall,
A fantastic radio.
Some have reported the battery covers fall off easily, mine do not. But I did have to pay close attention installing them. Radiomaster must have made a change. I think they are listening to the customer!
Coldblooded on thingiverse has a 3d printable battery holder (Radiomaster Zorro Nano Module 2s Li-ion Battery Pack Mount) which works great. This is the one pictured. I use it when programming ,as that takes some time. The suggested method of strapping the battery under the connector is too bulky for my preference.
With so many PNP kits and each one with their own radio protocol, This radio will fit most all of them. This way you don't have multiple transmitters, trying to keep the batteries maintained, and forgetting the one you need at home.
Range, Features, Comfort, this radio has everything I hoped for.
Considering getting a Zorro Max to go along with it.
As always, Helidirect has super fast shipping and Great customer support!
